Module 1 | Getting Started

I’d like to start off by welcoming you to the New Media Blueprint. This 6 week course will take you through all the steps necessary to develop your brand online and leverage that brand to create more leads for your business.

Watch this video to get a high level overview of what we’re going to accomplish over the next 6 weeks.

Before you do anything, make sure to read this entire document from top to bottom. Once you’ve read every word you can come back and start working on the assignments and watching the accompanying videos.

The biggest time waster I’ve found online is not being organized. So we’ll start off by making sure our lines of communication are open so we’re all on the same page. Let’s start off with the tools you’re going to need for this adventure.

—-

The first thing we need to do is get our emails synchronized. If you haven’t already set up a gmail account you need to do that now.

—–

Action: Set up Gmail account

1. Go to Gmail
2. Name your account “yourfirstname.yourlastname”
3. Once you’ve set up your account send an email to me so I know you’ve done it.

Why this is important:

Google offers a wide variety of tools that we will be using throughout this training. In order to access those tools you need to have an account with them.

Note: If you’re not ready to switch your email address over, don’t worry, you can just forward your emails from gmail to your other address. To learn how to do that watch this video.

Some of the other important Google tools we’ll be using are:
Google Calendars: Watch these videos to learn more
Google Docs: Watch these videos to learn more

*Note: I don’t expect you to watch every single video. I just wanted to provide you with resources to answer your questions.

—-
Just in case you don’t have a Facebook account you’ll need to set one up now. Facebook is going to be one of the core focuses in our training.
—-

Action: Setup Facebook Account
1.  Setup your Facebook account
2.  Setup your profile
3.  Use a good photo
4.  Fill in your business info
5.  Send me a friend request

Why this is important:
Facebook.com is the largest social network hands down with over 400,000,000 users. That means the people around you are likely to already be there. If you want to pick up clients you have to go where they are, and right now they’re on Facebook.

Facebook is also going to be the linchpin in our New Media Strategy. In future training you’ll learn some advanced techniques for using Facebook to build and foster real relationships.

—-
The next tool we’re going to be using quite a bit is Twitter. If you don’t already have a twitter account set one up now
—-

Action: Set up Twitter account

1.  Set up your account on Twitter
2.  You should name your account “yourfirstname.yourlastname”
3.  Once your account is setup, Follow me
4.  Complete your profile
5.  Use the same picture you used in Facebook as your avatar.

Why this is important:
Twitter is a growing network and most people don’t know what to do with it. In my opinion the most incredible tool available for listening to conversations is Twitter Search. Twitter is a great way to stay in touch with your networks as well as a place to start building your soft list.

—-
The next tool we’ll be using is You Tube. If you’ve already set up your gmail account you’ll automatically be able to log in to You Tube.
—-

Action: Complete your You Tube Profile
1.  Use the same photo as the other accounts
2.  Fill in your profile completely
3.  Subscribe to my channel

Why this is important:
You Tube is one of the best resources available to you. You can research just about any topic and find videos with answers to your specific questions. Did you look at the video links I gave you above? I found those on You Tube by searching, “How to ….”

Another reason You Tube is awesome is for the SEO benefit. In upcoming training we’re going to talk more about targeting keywords to control your niche and your search results, video is a great way to do that.

And last, but not least video is a great way to connect. Most of us grew up watching TV, with You Tube you can create your own TV Network on a very specialized topic. This is a quick way to establish authority, as well as making it easy for people to connect because they can see you.

—-
Next you’ve got to get set up on the professional business network of Linked In. This network is a great business to business network where you can find all sorts of professionals. It’s also a great place to demonstrate your market expertise, but we’ll talk more about that later.
—-

Action: Create/ Complete your Linked in Profile
1.  Go to Linked In to create your profile
2.  Be sure to use the same photo as your other profiles
3.  Make sure your profile is completely filled out

Why this is important
Linked In is the largest professional network online. Some of the benefits to using Linked In are the ability to share your work history as a sort of online resume. It’s also indexed by Google, so you can share links to your other internet properties. To learn more about Linked In you can watch these videos.

—-
From time to time we’ll need a quick way to connect, that’s when we use Skype. Skype is a free voice over IP (VOIP) service kinda like Vonage. If you don’t already have a Skype account, you’ll need to set one up now.
—-

Action: Set up a Skype Account

1.  Go to Skype
2.  Name your account “yourfirstname.yourlastname”

Keep your login information in a safe place.

Why this is important:

Sometimes we just need a quick way to connect. Skype not only allows us to make voice calls, we can also us it for IM’s (Instant Messages), as well as sharing files while we’re on a call. The most importatnt thing is that you get it set up because we’ll be using it for our Q & A calls.

—-
The next tool that I’d like to cover briefly is Hootsuite. This tool allows you to post updates in both Facebook and Twitter. It’s a great way to stay organized and manage your time. If you don’t already have an account, set one up now.
—-

Action: Set up Hootsuite Account

1.  Go to Hootsuite
2.  Create your account (your username will be your email address, so make sure to use the gmail address you       created earlier)

Why this is important:
Hootsuite has many important features to help manage your time effectively online. Not only that, but they offer some really easy ways to share information and see how that information is being used. To learn some more about Hootsuite right now, watch this video.

Recap:
